Achieving a fair split of your marital property in a divorce becomes much more challenging if you are unaware that certain assets exist. This might occur if your spouse has tried to hide them from you.

The majority of spouses won’t do this, but the following signs might indicate that they have.

1. Unusual activity on your bank statements

Perhaps you’ve held your money with the same bank for eons, and then suddenly, your spouse started preaching about the need to diversify your investments. That’s probably fine, as long as you know where they reinvested it all.

2. A sudden interest in cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs)

Maybe there is a legitimate reason for their interest, as these modern methods of storing money have proved highly successful for some. Yet, some spouses use them to hide money from partners who have no understanding or interest in such technologies. They come with incredible security that could result in you struggling to gain a share of those assets, even if you know where they are.

3. Not receiving usual bonuses or payouts

If your spouse has always received a significant payout from their business or their employer at the same time each year, be cautious if they have not received it this year. They may have asked to delay the payment until after the divorce to avoid it being included in the asset division process.

Finding hidden assets won’t be easy, so consider seeking legal help if you suspect it’s an issue in your divorce.
